The Scientific Eye!

In the next couple of weeks, we will be sharing on the theme; "The Scientific Eye," which will focus on the world of science. We will start off with

MATERIALS.

Materials are substances from which an object can be made from.

They can be classified into two groups. These are: Metals and Non- metals.

WHAT ARE METALS?

Metals are MATERIALS that are solid, strong and have a shiny surface when new. Some examples of Metals are:

  • v   Gold,
  • v  Silver,
  • v  Aluminum,
  • v  Lead,
  • v  Copper,
  • v  Zinc,
  • v  Iron, etc.

Because Metals are MATERIALS they can be used to make objects  such us:

  • v  Saucepan,
  • v  Nails,
  • v  Ladle,
  • v  Bucket,
  • v  Roofing Sheets,
  • v  Wrist Watch, etc.

 PROPERTIES OF METALS

The Properties of Metals are as follows:

  • Majority of Metals are hard and strong;
This means they cannot break easily.
  • Metals have shiny surfaces when new;
This means they reflect light. NOTE: The glint of light on Metals are called LUSTER.
  • Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity;
This means they are able to heat up easily and electricity Is able to flow.
  • Metals are Malleable;
This means that they can be beaten into shape.

  • Metals are Ductile;
This means they can be stretched or pulled out into long wires without breaking.
